Don't Put the Child Away Too Long

Words and music by Bill Price

I don't know how to feel anymore
I forgot what it's like to be wild
I pulled a photograph out of a drawer
It was me staring back as a child

There I was, maybe eight - maybe nine
Looking straight up at the sky
In my hand I held something behind me
The sun was bright in my eye

I remember they said I was crazy - they were right - it was right in my smile

Don't put the child away too long
Don't put the child away too long
Send him off to his room - expect death and soon
Don't put the child away too long

The year is blurry - the moment so clear
The sky was our neighborhood boundary
We knew too little to know any fear
Isn't that how it always should be?

It's OK to be crazy - it's in short supply but it's a good quality

Don't put the child away too long
Don't put the child away too long
Send him off to his room - expect death and soon
Don't put the child away too long

What to do to stay out of the dark?
I put that picture in a most sacred place
The door of my fridge holds the holiest art
A place for feeding off God's simple grace

It's OK to be crazy - you'll find forgiveness flows through some of that space

Don't put the child away too long
Don't put the child away too long
Send him off to his room - expect death and soon
Don't put the child away too long
