Last Word

Words and music by Bill Price

I won't be gone too long
Don't you wait up
I'll be back before you know it
Before the loneliness can fill half your cup

I'll be thinking about you
I won't forget to write
She said, "Don't be a stranger, darling"
But it all seemed just a little bit trite

It could be a slip of the lip - might be a trip of the tongue
It's like the last angel climbing up to heaven - foot on the last rung
It's like the last drop in the desert - the last thunder heard
I'm standing in still water, up to my heart in your last word

He had a dream for sure
For the blessed and the cursed
He said, "Why have you forsaken me
Left me wkh bitterness to quench my thirst?"

"I will fight no more forever"
Weary words - a reluctant pledge
But how many backs must break
Before we heed the voice and pull out the wedge?

It could be a slip of the lip - might be a trip of the tongue
It's like the last train out - the final bell rung
It's like your last day in waiting it's the end of the absurd
I'm standing in still water, up to my heart in your last word

A decision's dance - a stare or a glance
It's time to say what needs to be said
This might be your last chance
You got to write what needs to be read

It could be a slip of the lip - might be a trip of the tongue
It's like the last thought spoken - the last thought sung
It's like the last great painter - one with his vision unblurred
I'm standing in still water - I'm up to my heart in your last word

Deeds are drowning out discussion
Talk is cheap but talk can be true
It's a message for remembrance
That's existing beyond anything that you do

So farewell my brethren
Yours in the name of the brotherhood
May Godspeed and grace be yours
May your head be just and your heart be good

It could be a slip of the lip - might be a trip of the tongue
It's like the last tumblers falling - the last prisoner sprung
It's one last look behind you - the last injustice endured
I'm standing in still water - I'm up to my heart in your last word
