The Circus & The Gallows

Words and music by Bill Price

There's a hangman in the hallway - a hangman by your side
There's a hangman with a noose - there's a hangman with a tie

The circus and the gallows - I hesitate to look
The hangman on the screen - he's the same man in the book

There's a jester in the courtyard - a jester in your bed
There's a jester at the altar turning lilies bloody red

The jester and the hangman are laying all those bricks
They've built a wall around your view - made their reputation stick

Checking out - checking in
New sinner, same old sin - again

Every day I dance with demons - every night I sing with saints
I'm shadowing the art mob as they try and frame their paint

See the hangman and the saint stretch the rope and twist the knot
I'm thinking, did I dream that? - maybe not

Checking out - checking in
New sinner, same old sin - again

I don't wanna see the killer or the crime
All I wanna see is the moon with you - one last time

Those champions eat their breakfast - spin their straw right into gold
The piper leading patrons is the piper just paroled

The organ grinder's sold out - that's what the writer said
But the paper paid the writer for the story that I read (that's what I said)

Checking out - checking in
New sinner, same old sin - again
